ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [LE MOIS.] Charcoal, pastel and pencil sketch. Circa 1899. 33x24 1/2 inches, 84x62 cm. Condition B+: repaired tears at edges and in image. Matted. Hand-signed by Mucha. A preliminary sketch for what was to become the cover of Le Mois magazine, April, 1902, depicting "Jesus Among the Doctors." It was subsequently reused, in different colors, for the covers of the May and June issues as well. Le Mois was a Catholic monthly publication, featuring literature and pictures published between 1899 and 1917. Mucha designed twelve medallions, circular images, depicting the months, which were used for the covers of the magazine, as well as several images in a more specifically religious context.
